Don't know if this is the solution, since you don't say what type of Macs
these
are or if they were upgraded from System 6, but it's worth a shot:
Open up your System File. I've seen situations (not with fonts, but with DAs)
where some upgraded machines had a DA left in the System file, but it also
placed a copy in the Apple Menu Items folder. This resulted in duplication of
the DA in the Apple menu. Something similar could have occurred with the
Fonts
and their "migration" to the Fonts folder during an upgrade.
Like a said, it's worth a shot... ;-)

It's just impressive how far around the world one can go
to get information about the most recent Apple hardware,
prices, and most recent discontinued Apple hardware. Wow!

The question is given above. Nuff sed.
The envelope please... (need I say?)
Unanimous in favor of the IIv xxxxxxxx No.
Everybody voted for the 660av although there were
a couple small campaigns for the LCIII.
Hmmmm, that's what I bought. ;)
Here are condensations (still about 190 lines),
[with a few inpertinent remarks of mine]:
[1]
Your friend is better off with a LC III than with a IIvx.
...
660AV is an great machine in the price/performance area.
... AV stands for AUDIO Visual.
[2]
The $1000 will be well-spent. The IIvx and IIvi will likely
be the most dinosaur-ified models of recent history. ...
Your professional musician friend will certainly appreciate
that DSP. Voice recognition will probably not be a major
concern, but true 16-bit sound in and out, and sampling
rates up to 48 KHz, should get his attention. Not to mention
that, with appropriate software, you can do effects and
sound synthesis in real time. The software hasn't been
written yet, but I'd expect to see a $400 package within the
year that takes the place of many thousands of dollars'
worth of rack-mounted effects boxes. (No, I don't have any
inside tips, I'd just be _very_ surprised if no one filled
that particular market void.)
Hm. Let me modify that: I know the 840AV can do 16-bit
sampling and playback at 48 KHz. I don't know about the
660AV; I presume its DSP is also running at 66 MHz, but I
guess I don't know for sure. Double-check me on that one.
[Comments anyone?]
[3]
... The reason for the IIvx being so
cheap is they're trying to flush them out (apt choice of
words, if I do say so myself). Avoid at all costs, unless he
wants to upgrade to a Centris 650 (simple motherboard swap
for about $1200-$1500).
As a pro musician, he probably has access to better,
easier-to-use samplers and synthesizers than Mac software
can provide, so the sampling and DSP capabilities of the
660av are probably a waste of time for him. Voice commands
might be handy but useless on stage or in a noisy studio
environment.
[He probably won't use the Mac in the opera pit. :) ]
So, my recommendation would be for a fast machine that can
do MIDI well and that is small enough to drag around. Space
is at a premium in most studios, so a bulky machine like the
IIvx or 660av has points against it in my book. The LC III
is a good contender an all three counts. ...
[4]
Choose 68040 machines for fast reponse in music DTP programs
such as Finale. 68040 + double-speed CD-ROM are musts for
multimedia. Need *big* (0.3-1Gb) *fast* SCSI-2 disk plus
wicked-awesome fast CPU for recording digital audio direct
to disk.
[For] musical DTP, score printing etc., need fast computer
probably 68040, if you don't like long waiting for program
response. Especially it's true for so complicated programs
like Finale.
Try Apple Back-to-school specials.
[Too bad. He's one of the "rest of them" who pay retail.
No discount connections by honest means.]
... presence of AT&T DSP is very tempting for musical
applications. Be AWARE of short 7" NuBus slot in Centris
660AV. The majority of add in cards are longer than 7".
I've just ordered Quadra 840AV because of 660AV has only 1
short NuBus slot. Voice recognition is nice thing, digital
phone, answering machine video phone, video I/O too. I
recomend you Centris 660av if you do not plan expansion or
840av if you are power user...
[5]
Yup, [the IIvx is] a toad. Slower than a IIci and a waste of
money. I say go for the 660AV. (That's what I'd buy!). :-)
I think voice will become a lot more important in the
future, but stereo sound is a big deal for a musician. Also,
the 660AV has that DSP chip that can work with special
software to do really neat sound things.
[6]
For a musician, the choice is easy. The IIvx does not have
true stereo capabilities, but the 660av does. You can
upgrade the llvx; it's the same box as the Centris 650.
However, by the time you mess with it, the better idea is
just to get the 660av anyhow. It has the same 68040 25M FPU
as the 650, yet comes with more bells and whistles and a
lower price. Good deal, I think, and I'm in the process of
buying one myself.
[7]
[The IIvx is] not listed because it has been dropped by
Apple as a model that is no longer produced. At least you
can't get it through educational sales.
>What's the scoop? The price difference (at the store
>he can buy from) is about US$1000.
It's generally called a firesale. This is what happens just
before Apple discontinues an item.
>Does Apple still support this model?
Of course. Apple still supposrts the entire Mac II line of
computers. Even the original Mac II.
[Well, there's "support" and there's *support*.]
>Upgradeability? (Good word, no?)
The IIvx will have a direct motherboard upgrade to the
PowerPC when it becomes available.
[8]
660av has impressive ability to sample and playback CD
quality stereo sounds.
...
All I need now is the software to be developed to fully
utilise this or link it to my existing sequencers.
+----------------------------------------------------+
+ Burn all spelling checkers-------------------------+
+----------------------------------------------------+
[Yeah.]
[9]
The vx has been discontinued, and for it's orginal price was
really slow_d! if you want to get a cheap fast machine, go
for the 610. the 660 is the same case as the 610, but faster
processor amd all the other goodies, like video in/out etc,
speech reconition.
Your music friend might like that. Otherwise, if he does
need the extra expansion slots (the 610/660 only has one
"small" halfsize slot) he should go for the 650, which is
the same price as a 660, but not with the video, etc., but
same speed and three expansion slots.
You should check out that the computers work properly with
MIDI though. some computers have quirks (in particular the
powerbooks have problems with midi timing).
[PRJ] Summary:
Looks like the choice is obvious. Thanks for backing me up.
In closing, I forgot to say that this professional musician
is an *acoustic* musician (French horn). Digital sampling is
starting to put him out of commercial recording work. :(
Two sides to every coin. Not everybody *enjoys* all the new
technology. Think of him when y'all post new cool sounds.

I don't know about version 1.01, mine says 1.0. What I can say is that
Graph III will do everything that Graph 1.3 does and more... it just takes a
lot longer to do it! The interface is anything but intuitive and ofter
requires
digging through two or three menus to accomplish what 1.3 can do with a
double click. And printing more than one graph on a page is not easy.
I use 1.3 for most of my work and go to Graph III when I need the extra
features! Having used CG III I'm not sure that the added features ju
the added effort to use it.

Hi,
There also another way to do this, if you need to convert ANY text file
you receive (ex. from PC machines on a floppy).
Use Type resolve: it's a 'dropper' util. It can assign different creators
by using name extensions. Simply Drag & Drop your file over Type resolve
icon and it will have its creator changed.
During my thesis work I converted from VAX to PC to MAC plenty of .tex files
by setting "filename.tex" --> ALPHA creator (*GREAT* text editor).
Type resolve is at SUMEX:
-r 21238 Apr 4 18:31 ./app/type-resolve-20.hqx
-r 35519 Apr 23 23:34 ./util/type-resolve-201.hqx

Subject: Macs---To Leave on or not?
To this ongoing discussion I throw in the twist: What about printers?
I leave my computer on during my waking hours, starting up only once
a day, but always get paranoid about leaving my LaserWriter on too.
Then I thought how odd that I treated the two objects in completely
opposite manners. I don't have the knoweledge to know if I am being
inconsistent or if printers vary in some way that would justify
this change in my routine. Any opinions?

Subject: Marching Band software for Mac?
Is there any software for the Mac that allows you to set up drills for
marching
band? I've heard of a program that lets you, say, set up a pattern, then set
up the following pattern, and the program will then "move" the people from one
set to the next, showing you any problem areas, collisions, etc.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure this is a Mac product.
Anybody heard of such a beast?

Hi all,
We use a NetModem/E to connect to AppleLink. When we disconnect, we get the
message that "modem could not hang up the phone properly". You then have to
dismiss that with an "OK", and then everything is fine.
A while back I saw posted somewhere the modem string for AppleLink that would
fix that. I lost it when my system got trashed and I had to restore my prefs
>From an old archive.
Does anyone know the string?

Subject: New MacTCP version?
I've seen mention of a new version (2.0.2?) of MacTCP. What is the deal
here?
What is new, fixed, different, etc? Who is this version for? I know that
1.1 -> 1.1.1 was only a System 7.1 fix, and I'm wondering what if anything
is going on with the new version, if it's worth trying to get
(System 7.0.1, IIsi) or what...
Thanks,

Miles Abernathy posted strong regrets on the absence of new postings
listings in the Info-mac digest. I beg to differ. It's refreshing
not to have to wade through dozens of *--- lists before getting to
the meat of the information in the day's journal. I would think anyone who
tracks the arrival of new stuff is perfectlty capable of downloading the
list as often as desired, without the rest of us having to wade through
the daily clutter.
IMOH, obviously.

Subject: One place where Windoze beats Mac (Summary)
Here is the format of this letter:
1) apology for lateness
2) reiteration of issue (& rewording)
3) summary of responses
4) summary of suggestions
5) request for further response method
6) personal and legal disclaimers
1) apology:
I am really sorry for taking so long to post this summary - I promised it for
at least 3 weeks ago (maybe more). It was cruch time at work, then I became a
TA, and haven't had a moment to blah blah blah, etc. I have lost more
excuses.
The point is, I'm sorry, and here it is.
2) reiteration of issue:
I wrote in in mid August, and offered the following comment:
"One really nice thing about MS Windoze, compared to the Mac is that you
don't NEED the mouse to do most things in a normal session. Windoze lets
you select the menus and all menu items with a couple keystrokes, and the
cursor keys. Also, pressing tab in a dialog box cycles you through ALL
items in the dialog (not just text boxes), which can then be controlled
with the space bar and the arrows.
"In short, you can have an entire session without chasing icons around the
screen with the mouse. Keystrokes are positive - it is rare to type a
wrong keystroke compared to missing an object with the mouse".
Two responses suggested that I didn't quite make the point clear, and made the
following point:
"Actually, you are wrong - all Macs have the built in ability to navigate
without the mouse, because they come with 'Easy Access', which lets you
control the arrow with the keyboard."
To this, I respond "Touche - I stand corrected," and restate the problem as:
"Windoze almost always allows the user to navigate in an object aware
fashion. By this, I mean that the user can navigate by OBJECTS instead of
by pixels. Nearly every object in Windoze (applications, menus, windows,
dialog box items, icons, etc) is in some list wich can be accessed and
scanned using only keys.
"It can sometimes get very frustrating to miss an object by 2 pixels, and
get no response, or worse yet, the wrong response."
The point is well taken, and my reaction is this: "Ok, its not the mouse that
I
mind, but rather the use of an analog input into a digital system. Pixels on
the Mac aren't important - objects are." With this redefinition, "Easy Access"
is NOT a solution. One response had a good tangential point, though: "Easy
Access is great when your mouse is broken".
3) Summary of Responses:
Much to my surprise, EVERYONE agreed with me. I am pleased that such a devoted
group of Mac lovers are willing to admit that there is something better about
Windoze (I don't like to admit it myself, but I do).
Most people simply said "I agree - Windoze keyboard navigation really does
beat
the Mac once you know your way around". A couple of people added that Windoze
has some odd & convoluted keystoke sequences, which are no good if you don't
remember them. This is true, but I was specifically pointing out the "Alt-Tab
+
cursor keys" ability of Windoze, which is so universal that it is worth
learning even if you do think that it is convoluted.
Several people pointed out that System 7 has a lot more keyboard shortcuts,
particularly for Finder navigation. Some said "There are a lot more than you
know about: Look under Baloon Help:Finder Shortcuts." This is very true - If
you haven't read the Finder Shortcuts section of Baloon help, you should.
There
are tons of usefull keystrokes there. (I find it amusing that someone who
doesn't know me can try to tell me how much I know, which more than one person
did!!)
Finder shortcuts don't solve it all, though. If you have to take your hand off
of the keyboard for anything at all in a given task, then you have defeated
half of the purpose of keyboard shortcuts: The convenience of keeping your
eyes on the screen because you don't have to look for the mouse, and then
later
the keyboard again.
In otherwords, the Mac interface is constantly forcing us to switch input
devices. Some people commented that the mouse is a great input for people who
are new. It is very friendly, and logical: so it simultaneously helps you feel
good about the system and shows you your way around it. It is alot like
training wheels on your first bike - You couldn't have started without 'em,
but
you sure don't want 'em around now!!
Another good point that was made was that while OS navigations via objects is
great, you wouldn't want to paint or draw with the keyboard. I agree. Graphics
applications are inherently analog systems, so a mouse makes sense. Of course
there are plenty of object oriented graphics applications, but even those are
dependant of analog input at some level (i.e. when you first draw the
object).
4) suggestions:
Several people had suggestions on ways to rectify the deficiency. Some
simply theorized that it wouldn't be hard to implement an object aware
navigation aid. Others named specific applications that are either a step in
the right direction, or are actually all of the way there.
Before I offer the suggestions, I want to point out that so far, everyone who
has commented has unanimously agreed that this ability is something that
should
be part of the Mac OS by default. All of the suggestions that follow are
simply
"fixes". The question of how good the OS is "off the shelf" is still valid and
important.
APPLE DEVELOPPERS TAKE NOTE: Unanimous concurrance is a rare thing in
the world today, and we seem to have exactly that on the suggestion that the
Mac OS should come with an object aware input paradigm!!
Here are the suggestions, and the abilities they offer. I only know what I
was told in response to my original posting. Many of these utilities may have
more or less ability than presented here, so please don't use this as a
basis for comparison. I am only reporting what I am told that these do.
product info I was given about the product
---------- ------------------------------------------------------
Frontier Nothing specific, only that it "can help"
Quickeys Allows user to define tons of macros
Connectix Powerbook Has utility to allow mac to do "everything" including
Utilities (CPU) menu navigation, and dialog box navigation.
Connectix Desktop Aparently the same thing as CPU (above), but tailored
Utilities (CDU) for desktop machines
Now Utilities Has utility ("NOW Menus") which allows full keyboard
menu navigation.
5) Request for further response method:
If you have any comments, please email them directly to me, and allow me to
post a summary. This helps avoid digest "wars", and also keeps the table of
contents a little bit cleaner for people who aren't interested in the topic.
I promise that I will respond sooner this time: I am back in school, so I
actually read my email every day again.
My email address is:
adorfman@cs.tufts.edu
6) disclaimers:
personal: I know my spelling is terrible, so please don't respond just to
correct it. If emacs didn't find it, and you can parse it, then I
figure its close enough for volunteer work. On the off chance that
you read this and I inadvertently try to get you to hire me later in
life, please understand that I only apply this attitude when I am
giving my time away for free.
If anything I said here has offended you or anyone you know, please
understand that it wasn't meant that way. If you have a specific
concern, please take it up with me directly, and don't bother the
whole community just because I bungled my words.
legal: All of the information contained in this document is either opinion
or heresay. I have made every effort to make this as accurate as
possible, but I do NOT claim that it is completely correct.
If I have misrepresented a product that you work with, or you want
the credit for your product to be more specific, send me email, and
I will include it in the follow-up summary.
Hope you found this interesting or helpful!

On the same subject, when I get shareware payments from the US, I have to
return checks. To cash in a check drawn on a US bank, they charge $12, and
my fee is $10... Even a $15 check doesn't make much sense. I keep
recommending my users to send a $10 bill, neatly wrapped (which is what
the bank recommends, too - but I don't know if the post office would agree).
So the "standard fees" are often *high*, at least for small shaeware fees.

I used an SE/30 for 4 years, longing for a functional power-up key on the
Apple Extended keyboard. Now that I have my new Centris 660 AV, I
couldn't wait to use it.
What is this? It doesn't work??!! When I shut down, instead of a
complete shutdown, I still get the dialog box that "It is now safe to
power off " or whatever it says. I still have to press the power switch
on the front of the Centris.
Let me guess.... the Centris models do not support the power key... and
can never do so because of the hardware architecture... am I right?

Is change good? What if things did not change?
These are two things to think about when asking if the new
directory structure is good or not.
1: If it had not changed I could still find everything.
(You still can. Try using Fetch or download the filelist.)
2: I do use fetch and the aliases are confusing.
(You will get used to them.)
3: I just plain don't like them.
(Then just plain don't like them. Where else are you going
to go and get quality low priced mac software?)
4: Change is good.
5: Really good change MUST be drasticaly different.
6: If things did not change we would not need computers to keep up
with the changes.
